MEP Engineering

Building Services

At CPW, our experienced team of MEP engineers combines a passion for working collaboratively with clients with a desire to design better buildings for people and the planet.  We have a reputation for being one of the country’s leading environmental building services consultancies. Our highly trained engineers always aim to deliver added value to our clients and incorporate sustainable solutions in every design.

Our resulting projects are feats of high-quality, technically advanced engineering design. Our emphasis on market-leading, innovative solutions ensures that we achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients.

MEP services we provide

Feasibility Studies and Business Cases

We provide a range of studies at high level or in-depth to suit the needs of our clients, often using detailed knowledge of the sites at which we regularly work and using a range of analysis tools to explore the options. We consider all relevant factors such as technical, economic, and legislative and structure the reports to suit the different business case needs of the various sectors in which we work.

Mechanical Engineering

CPW’s mechanical engineers provide high quality and innovative design solutions, with an attention to detail that achieves efficient, reliable operation and a practicality that ensures that systems are easy to maintain and simple to operate. The common systems, such as heating, ventilation and cooling are still subject to option appraisal and optimisation to respond to the individual needs of each and every project.

Electrical Engineering

CPW’s electrical engineers bring life to the buildings we design. We are experts in the design of the multitude of different systems that form electrical buildings services, from high power generation and distribution to intercoms. Many are critical systems for life safety and security, requiring careful design and a strong, clear understanding of the associated standards, guidance and obligations.

Public Health Engineering

Well-designed water and wastewater systems are essential to the successful operation of any building. Here at CPW we have a dedicated team of public health engineers who are able to integrate above ground drainage systems seamlessly within the confines of a buildings skeletal core.

Digital Engineering

Digital engineering is integral to everything we do at CPW. Responsible for the digitisation of the built environment, our Digital engineers specialise in the following areas: Building Information Modelling, advanced thermal/energy simulation modelling, heat network modelling, daylight modelling.

The design of building services engineering systems is only half of the story. Here at CPW we understand that a truly innovative solution is only fully realised when accurately installed and commissioned. We are thus committed to supporting our clients throughout the construction process. Our design engineers undertake regular inspections to verify compliance with the specification with a particular focus on commissioning activities. Our team of experienced site engineers have an eye for installation quality and often assist our clients in a clerk of works capacity.

Construction Monitoring

We undertake condition surveys of various types. Our experienced site engineers have a familiarity with most systems that have been used over the years and the techniques needed to trace, measure and assess.

Featured project

The DARTeC building is spearheading research into digital aviation technology.

The building creates a unique research environment for a number of leading aeronautical development groups who will be working on potentially game-changing technologies in air traffic control and airport management.

Frequently asked questions

  • MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and public health. MEP engineering, otherwise known as M&E or building services engineering, involves overseeing the planning, design and implementation of a building’s MEP systems, which are crucial for it to function. These systems bring a building to life - without them it would just be a shell with no heat, power or light. MEP engineering can also include sustainable design, low and zero carbon technologies and energy management systems.

  • MEP or building services engineers will ensure that the design, installation and operation of all the technical services within a building are safe, comfortable and as environmentally friendly as possible. Within this, they will consider the sustainability of the design and the environmental impact of a building. They work closely with other specialists such as architects, cost consultants, master planners, ecologists, contractors, acousticians and fire consultants at all stages of a project.

  • There are various systems which come under the umbrella of building services engineering, encompassing mechanical, electrical and public health systems. These include heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, water systems, fire alarms and security systems. There is overlap within the three areas of MEP engineering, so the engineers will all work closely throughout the lifecycle of construction.
