Principal Public Health Engineer
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Public Health Engineer to join us at CPW, based at our Solihull office. This is a permanent full-time position working 36.25 hours per week under our agile framework.

Key responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead design of above‑ground foul drainage systems in full accordance with BS EN 12056‑2, covering sanitary pipework layout, pipe sizing via discharge units, gradients, filling ratios, stack design, branch connections, trap selection, and venting requirements.
Oversee design of roof drainage systems using BS EN 12056‑3, including conventional gravity systems or siphonic systems where appropriate.
Ensure all internal drainage complies with Approved Document H – Section 1 (Sanitary pipework), including requirements for traps, air‑tightness, materials, workmanship, and discharge stack performance.
Specify and review installation requirements in line with BS EN 12056‑5 (installation, testing, operation, and maintenance).
Integrate above‑ground drainage designs with building architecture, structural constraints, mechanical systems, plantrooms, risers, and coordination models (BIM).
Provide solutions for backflow prevention, ventilation strategy, acoustic drainage considerations, fire‑stopping of drainage penetrations, and maintenance access.
Conduct advanced technical reviews of calculations, drawings, specifications, and drainage modelling outputs.
Team Leadership & Mentoring
Lead, coach, and develop a team of public health engineers, ensuring high technical capability and consistent application of BS EN 12056 design methodology.
Run structured training sessions on topics such as: sanitary pipework sizing (EN 12056‑2), principles of roof drainage (EN 12056‑3), trap seal loss prevention, appliance connection design, and stack ventilation methods
Support junior engineers with design QA, personal development plans, and competency progression.
Governance, Assurance & Client Engagement
Establish and maintain discipline standards, templates, QA procedures and technical design guides.
Liaise with architects, MEP teams, and building control officers to ensure compliance with Approved Document H for sanitary pipework.
Present drainage design strategies to clients, explaining performance, compliance, sustainability, and maintenance implications.
Contribute to project planning, risk management, and mitigation strategies for internal drainage (e.g. air-pressure transients, trap seal loss, appliance surcharging).
Required Qualifications & Experience
Degree in Public Health/Building Services/Civil Engineering or related discipline.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent experience at Principal level.
10+ years of experience designing above‑ground foul and rainwater drainage systems.
Strong experience in technical coordination of internal drainage with architectural and mechanical layouts.
Key Skills & Competencies
Advanced proficiency in sanitary pipework and roof drainage design using EN 12056 methodology.
Strong understanding of drainage acoustics, fire‑stopping, stack ventilation, and cross‑flow issues.
Ability to mentor and develop junior public health engineers to ensure knowledge continuity.
Excellent communicator, able to lead technical discussions with clients and design teams.
High attention to detail and exceptional technical review capability.
Deliverables
Above‑ground drainage design reports, calculations, schematics, isometric drawings, and specifications aligned with EN 12056 standards.
Roof drainage sizing reports for gravity or siphonic systems per EN 12056‑3.
Sanitary pipework design packs demonstrating compliance with Approved Document H – Section 1.
Coordination drawings and clash‑resolved drainage models integrated into BIM.
