CPW Continues Support for WasteShark Leeds to Tackle Water Pollution

A pioneering aquatic robot known as a WasteShark, inspired by a whale shark’s open-mouthed feeding technique, is continuing its mission to collect litter from the waterways of Leeds city centre – with CPW proud to remain a key supporter of the initiative.

Since its launch, WasteShark has used cutting-edge technology to tackle floating waste, helping to protect local waterways and raise awareness of environmental pollution. In 2026, CPW continues its role as a proud sponsor of WasteShark Leeds, supporting its ongoing impact across the city.

CPW originally joined forces with other local businesses to invest in the drone, which can collect significant volumes of waste from the water’s surface as it moves. While improving the environment, the WasteShark operates with zero greenhouse gas emissions, produces no noise pollution, and poses no threat to wildlife. Equipped with GPS, LiDAR collision avoidance technology, cameras and electric motors, it remains a pioneering solution for urban waterway cleaning.

The latest generation of the WasteShark is capable of collecting up to 160 litres of waste at a time, using smart technology to navigate obstacles and operate safely within busy waterways. The drone can be controlled remotely or operate autonomously along pre-set routes, much like a robotic vacuum.

This month, CPW’s Leeds team visited the docks to see the WasteShark in action first-hand. As proud sponsor, the little bot even flew a CPW flag as the team took to the controls themselves – helping to collect litter from the water while gaining a deeper appreciation for the technology and its impact.

With the sun shining, it was a fantastic opportunity to engage directly with a project making a visible difference to the local environment.

“As a company, we are deeply committed to improving the world we live in – whether that’s through our sustainable design work or initiatives like this. Plastic pollution in our waterways is a significant issue, impacting wildlife, the environment and ultimately our own water systems. Supporting projects like WasteShark Leeds allows us to play an active role in tackling this challenge at a local level,” shared Gareth Moad, Director & North Lead at CPW.

The idea was originally generated by the Leeds Waterfront Group (LWG), a sub-group of the West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce’s Property and Economic Forum, bringing together local stakeholders to drive meaningful environmental change.

“We are very pleased to have brought this innovative project to life with the support of local businesses, Leeds City Council and Leeds Civic Trust. It continues to deliver real benefits for the city, while raising awareness of the importance of keeping our waterways clean and accessible for all,” said Paul Ellison, the group’s chair.

Following an incredible local fundraising effort in 2025, Leeds Waterfront Group (LWG) managed to raise over £45,000, to keep the drone going and this year it’s back stronger than ever. This community-led success has ensured the WasteShark can continue operating with increased capacity, tackling plastic, organic waste and debris across Leeds Dock.

As WasteShark returns for another year, its presence at Leeds Dock serves as both a practical solution and a visible reminder of the importance of protecting our natural environment.

If you’re in the area, keep an eye out – you might just spot the WasteShark in action!
