This major project comprised of the refurbishment of West Midlands Police’s headquarters in Birmingham city centre, a building which spans 17,000 square metres in total. An antiquated facility with a paltry DEC value of G, the headquarters were in need of modernisation to halt their slide into inefficiency. Our solutions helped secure EPC B and BREEAM Very Good ratings.
To address burgeoning occupant dissatisfaction, we recommended
an air permeability test which established existing levels were
well above those specified in the current Building Regulations.
Reducing the amount of heat and cooling escaping the building
therefore become a key design priority. We proposed a chilled
beam solution that maximises thermal comfort and control to
address this issue.
Another area of focus was to upgrade the building fabric and
collaborative working (in the form of investment versus return
analysis) with the architect enabled us to ascertain that replacing the glazing and improving insulation through installation of a thermal render was the most effective means of achieving this.
In addition, a low energy, dimmable and sensor driven LED panel and
control scheme was installed to address the client’s need to meet
various occupant requirements throughout the building.
