Graduate Power Systems Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Power System Engineer to join the CPW Power Team, working 36.25 hours per week under our agile framework.

The Role

As a Graduate Power Systems Engineer, you will be supported by senior members of the team to deliver Power System Engineering designs, modelling and reports for the following:

  • Assisting with support for projects that require specialist power systems engineering input or developing detailed designs for pure power systems projects from Low Voltage up to 132kV.

  • Supporting senior team members with developing technical reports and specifications.

  • Liaison with DNO’s.

  • Supporting network modelling and simulation (we use the ETAP software but experience with this or another similar platform is advantageous but not essential.

  • Attendance at design team meetings and presenting work to clients.

  • Visiting sites to inspect installations and review contractor’s work.

Once you have developed a good working knowledge in these core areas, then you can explore other areas of the Power system Engineers services that we offer and assist peers with the below.

Activities Undertaken

  • Network design for electrical distribution networks from Low Voltage up to 132kV.

  • Load flow and fault level analysis.

  • Protection studies.

  • Harmonic Analysis to demonstrate compliance with ENA ER G5/4.

  • Arc Flash assessments.

  • Voltage stability analysis.

  • Insulation coordination studies.

  • Site surveys and investigations.

  • Substation and cable network design.

  • Generation schemes, including standby and peak power, wind turbines and solar photovoltaic schemes.

  • Submission of documentation to DNO’s and obtaining compliance and approval for embedded generation schemes to be connected.

  • Substation earthing design.

  • Production of specifications and drawings.

  • Technical Reports.

  • Liaison with contractors during project execution.

  • Site attendance during commissioning.

  • Offering powers system advice to building services engineers

Whatever your areas of interest in Power Systems, you’ll be working with a wide variety of both public and private sector clients, new builds and refurbishments, from planning stage right through to construction and completion.

Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Recently obtained Degree (or equivalent) in in Power System Engineering, or related discipline is required.

  • You must have the ability to work collaboratively both within the business and externally, have a strong propensity to work with others and should be conscientious and committed.

  • You should also be a well-organised, proactive, flexible, driven, forward planner with the ability to deliver work to a high standard and to tight timescales.

  • You will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and a strong willingness to learn and a desire to develop new and existing skills.

  • Proven experience working within the industry would be ideal but a real desire to promote sustainability in the built environment is also very important.

  • You will become an integral part of our team, as well as being able to work on your own initiative and with a proactive approach.
