The development of this hospice consisted of both new build and refurbishment elements and has increased the facility to approximately 4,600m2. The new build element offers an in-patient wing providing 20 single en-suite bedrooms, Integrated Services e.g. quiet room, group meeting areas and therapy facilities, improved staff facilities and a dedicated educational facility, arranged over three floors while the existing building has been renovated to provide a day hospice.
New build elements of St Michael’s Hospice were designed and developed using PassivHaus principles in order to minimise energy consumption through effective building physics and thermal performance. To meet these stringent principles, some unique design and construction methods have been implemented, for example a complete timber frame was combined with recycled newspaper insulation creating a facility that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.
