The new College covers 25,000m2 over six floors and includes teaching rooms, social spaces, vocational learning areas and administration offices.
Due to its town centre location mechanical ventilation has been adopted to reduce the risk of pollution from road traffic and ensure high levels of air quality.
The building has been designed around a central atrium which maximises daylight within the internal spaces and also provides the return air path for the ventilation system.
This system also allows for free cooling as the ventilation system can run at night to cool down the exposed heavyweight mass within the spaces.
By pre-cooling these spaces, the amount of refrigeration cooling required during the day is reduced, resulting in lower energy usage.
