The Heart of the Campus was conceived as the centrepiece of an ambitious plan to establish a sustainable campus at Nottingham Trent University. Plans sought to bring together the University’s Pavilion, Teaching and Learning, Plaza, Refectory and Green Zone into one attractively landscaped area, designed to accommodate the increasing number of students retained on campus.
Pivotal to the success of this scheme was our understanding not only of the client’s brief but of the existing campus, which was gleaned through extensive study, regular client liaison and collaborative working with the architect-led design team.
In particular, the latter activity proved incredibly effective and comprised of various initiatives which helped us to develop the design and complement the strong aesthetic principles of the scheme. These included multi-stage energy modelling, value engineering workshops and continual engagement with NTU’s staff and students.
One of the key characteristics of the completed site is its excellence in energy efficiency – a key aspiration of NTU at the project onset. As experts in low carbon and sustainable design, we were able to play an integral role in ensuring that this ambition was realised. Once again, collaboration with the design team was crucial to identifying and implementing an optimally bespoke and effective solution.
