A major University of Worcester project, provided with expertise from environmental engineering consultancy couchperrywilkes, has been shortlisted for a prestigious architects’ award.
The £2 million Riverside Centre refurbishment has been recognised in the Architects’ Journal 2012 Retrofit Awards.
Now in its third year, the awards champion the best in the creative re-use of buildings and construction and a total of 73 projects from across the UK have been shortlisted in 13 categories.
The Riverside Centre, a former car dealership and garage that was converted into a sports and performing arts teaching facility, is one of five buildings shortlisted in the higher education category.
couchperrywilkes worked with KKE Architects Ltd and were tasked with providing mechanical, electrical and sustainability advice and design services that achieved Breeam “Very Good” in the, endorsing both sustainability and low energy aspects.
Environmental controls using a natural ventilation strategy were an integral part of the design, and included a low level building management system and controlled glazing to maximise night time cooling and reduce heat gains and heat losses from the building.
Simon Seaton-Smith, Director at couchperrywilkes’ Head Office in Birmingham, said: “This project gave us plenty of scope to introduce some of the very latest techniques to ensure an environmentally-sound building and we are delighted that it has been shortlisted for this prestigious award.
“We worked very closely with KKE Architects, which resulted in us producing an innovative and technically-advanced design to meet the needs of the university.”

A further three retrofit projects where couchperrywilkes are delivering environmental engineering design have also been shortlisted in the awards.
The awards are announced on the September 12 at an awards dinner at The Brewery, London.
