CPW qualify in PassivHaus

Two sustainable technology specialists at one of the UK’s leading dedicated M&E consultancies have qualified as PassivHaus consultants.  Dr Stephen Ball and Neil Foster received accreditation by PassivHaus in March 2010 and join just a handful of consultants in the UK who have been certified on this energy efficient construction principle.

PassivHaus buildings are a leading standard in energy efficient construction and are designed and built using efficient components and a whole house or building ventilation system to achieve exceptionally low running costs.  Aside from being comfortable, healthy and sustainable, a PassivHaus building typically achieves an energy saving of 90% compared to an existing building within the UK.

Dr Stephen Ball, Sustainability & Alternative Technology Consultant at Couch Perry & Wilkes, said: “The course at Strathclyde University was the first English PassivHaus programme ever to be run. With only a handful of qualified PassivHaus specialists in the UK, we are well placed to offer advice on passive low energy solutions, both in terms of heating strategy, occupancy comfort and building maintenance.

“The PassivHaus principles are well known and widely used across Europe, proving that this well conceived concept can successfully reduce energy and carbon emissions. PassivHaus is not restricted to purely residential as the title may suggest, but now widely adopted for schools, offices, and public buildings.”

Stephen continued, “A dwelling which achieves the PassivHaus standard typically includes high levels of insulation concentrating on mitigating any thermal bridges, optimisation of solar gains, and exceptional levels of air tightness whilst achieving good indoor air quality.

“We are currently working on three new PassivHaus designs in the UK which will be certified and given a Code Level 6 (under the BRE Code for Sustainable Homes) which is recognition as a true zero carbon building, a target the Government has set for 2016.”

Couch Perry & Wilkes has offices in Birmingham, Nottingham, Cambridge and Leeds.  The company has an extensive track record in delivering sustainable and low energy buildings, BREEAM services, energy modelling for Part L, and has an exceptional team of sustainable technology specialists.

Dr Stephen Ball regularly hosts seminars throughout the UK on sustainable building delivery, Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) and PassivHaus.
